Patek Philippe introduced the Ref. 1491 in 1940. The present watch is an example of the first incarnation of the reference, with Patek Philippe's cal. 12-120 movement and subsidiary seconds. The second version of the ref. 1491, initially available in 1943, bears a center sweeping seconds hand and carries the cal. 12SC movement.
What distinguishes the ref. 1491 is the shape of the lugs. Called "scroll" or, in some instances, horn lugs, the lugs represent a departure from the straight lugs normally employed by Patek and other manufactures. Produced from 1940 to 1958, the ref. 1491 serves as a testament to the elegant design of Patek Philippe's dress watches.
