The Rolex 1665 reference is an important part of the brand’s history, being the first production reference with a Helium Escape Valve. Within that reference, Rolex produced a variety of dial configurations and text designations.
In 1977, Rolex released what is known as the “Great White” Sea-Dweller Reference 1665. What started as a part of the Submariner group evolved into its own grouping, especially with the removal of the “Submariner 2000” text on the dial, leaving just the “Sea-Dweller” designation. The 1665 Great White was the first production Sea-Dweller model to lose the “Submariner” designation, thus marking the start of the evolution into two separate groups.
During its 5 year production run, the “Great White” was made with several dial varieties, with the present example featuring a Mark IV dial. Both the Mark III and Mark IV dials features a Rolex coronet with sharp/elongated and pointed tips, and the font of the depth rating is smaller than their predecessors. The Mark IV then differs in a few ways – with the “r” from “Oyster” aligning directly under the base of the “R” in “Rolex” (the Mark III Oyster “r” is more to the left), and with a smaller hyphen between “Sea” and “Dweller” than the Mark III dial.
Production of the Great White ended in 1982. Having been produced for five short years, the Great White Sea Dweller models have become increasingly sought-after. The present example is in excellent original condition, with luminous numerals and hands that have started to age to a warm orange shade, and thick lug proportions with original beveling.
