The first Milgauss model was launched in 1954, and produced for more than twenty years before Rolex stopped producing the model in the late 1980’s. The model was then re-launched in 2007 at Baselword, keeping in line with the original functionality and purpose of the first Milgauss model while having a modern and contemporary design.
In addition to being a larger diameter than the original models (40mm vs. 36 and 37mm), the new Milgauss came in three dial choices – black, white, and a special black version with a green sapphire crystal. All of the models featured an orange “lightning bolt” center seconds hand, a design trait that is inspired by the early Milgauss reference 6541. The new models were also depth rated to 100 meters, an improvement over the last Milgauss reference (1019) which was only waterproof to a depth of 50 meters.
Towards the end of 2013, Rolex stopped producing the 116400 Milgauss with black dial, nevertheless the versions with white dial and “green glass” are still available. The present watch is a mint example of the 116400 Milgauss with black dial, and still retains its original plastic covering on the case.
