Kari Voutilainen is a Finnish watchmaker, working for Parmigiani and teaching at his former watchmaking school (WOSTEP School of Watchmaking) before starting his own company in 2002. Voutilainen established his business as an independent watchmaker, exhibiting with the AHCI (Academie Horlogere des Createurs Independants) at Basel in 2005 before becoming a member in 2006.
The GMT model features an in-house movement of German silver plated with rose gold. It was inspired by his Vingt-8 (also known as “28”) movement but is a new caliber with more than 70 new components. Kari Voutilainen’s Vingt-8 movement was first presented in 2010, and was his first in-house movement - completely designed and manufactured in his workshop, including finishing and assembly. Voutilainen used two escape wheels and a large balance wheel to produce a very efficient watch that uses less energy, which in turn allows the watch to have a longer power reserve and is more stable for day-to-day wear. The GMT time is read by the triangle at the top of the subsidiary dial, and adjusted through the crown - pressing the crown down advances the disc one hour.
The day/night indication is hand-guilloched, as is the engine-turning on the rest of the dial, showing the great attention to detail and appreciation for hand-finishing that goes into each watch. Voutilainen has a small workshop, with 13 people working and produces just 50 watches each year, making the opportunity to own one a rarity. With the highest level of care going into the design and finishing of the in-house movement and the design and detailing on the dial and case of the watch, independent watch collectors find pieces by Kari Voutilainen refined and elegant.
