Introduced in the early 1960's, the Longines RR280 is a rather unique watch. Longines created specifically the watch for the Canadian Pacific Railroad.
The Canadian Pacific Railroad had the similar issues that the Unisted States Railroad companies were experimenting in the late nineteenth century. The need to standardize time across every city, town and railroad in a country as vast as a continent with multiple timezones. In 1893, the general Railroad timepiece standards was adopted and any watch used by rail companies and its employees has to meet strict criteria. In the 1930's and later in the 1950's these requirements were expanded to the wristwatches, specifically by the Canadian Pacific Railroad.
The Canadian Pacific Railroad had a long relationship with Longines and its American sister company Longines-Wittnauer. The RR280 was introduced in 1969 and was made in small quantities. It is understood that 5 different lots were made between 300-500 watches in each lot and that production was no more than 1500 pieces. That watch was specifically designed and produced for the Canadian pacific Railroad and not sold to the public. The watch is fitted with a unique movement with very high standards of chronometrie. The crown features a hacking device that stops the balance wheel.
The entire package was made to high degree of quality. The example we are offering is in impeccable condition and runs very well. The original dial is spotless, the case appears immaculate. This watch is a sleeper.
